How did I end up becoming a marketing coach?

“When I grow up I want to be….”

Let’s just say a marketing coach made zero cameo on my list. I always had this feeling that I was meant to do something special and I was terrified of never figuring it out. Finally something pivotal happened that would set forth an unexpected fate.

Six years ago, I was working as a professional cookie and pie taster. (Yup, it’s true.) It was a great job, but eventually sugar took its toll on my psyche… after a 2 week kick sugar challenge, I had an epiphany about food: food is related to everything! How we do food is a mirror for how we do life. So I became a nutrition counselor, on a mission to help people get radically honest about the relationship between what they eat and how they feel.

Keeping Myself A Secret & Waiting For The Phone To Ring

When I first started my practice I remember “wishing” it would all just manifest; that clients would magically find me, fall in love with my program, that I’d be acknowledged as an expert and build a thriving practice. After all, I had secret deal with the universe… I was meant to do this work so how could I NOT succeed?

Wake up call.

You’ve got to take action to build your practice. The question is, which actions should you take and in what order?

Running a practice can be overwhelming, there’s a lot of details and most of us are marketing blindly (focusing on tactics rather than strategies), or waiting for it all to be “perfect” before playing BIG.

Blind marketing + paralyzing perfectionism = Zero clients, zero money, depression, disappointment, embarrassment and burnout.

It may mean you have to go back to the job you hate, or that you’ll never live into your purpose. These were some of the exact fears that lit a fire under my ass to learn everything I could about marketing.

What I discovered in this process is that I LOVE marketing! As a holistic nutritionist I had distanced myself from it… selling was icky. I’d poke it with a stick once in awhile, but I didn’t want to be associated with it.

Then I realized marketing is all about psychology, building relationships, understanding how other people think and what motivates them to action. I started applying these principles to connect on an intimate, human, friend level with my clients.

The result: 0-72 clients, a wait-list, and a six figure income in my first year.

Suddenly marketing became very sexy.

Success turns me on.
Connecting on an intimate human level turns me on.
Making money turns me on.
These things get me excited, creative, empowered, ALIVE.

But it’s not just the end result. It’s the process… engaging with clients, unleashing creativity, innovating, realizing what makes YOU unique, and knowing with confidence that you can get RESULTS (rather than guessing what our clients want, crossing our fingers and desperately hoping someone signs up.)

In 2010 I joined forces with the awesome Carey Peters (http://www.holisticmba.com) and in just 18 months, we’ve generated a half a 1.5 million dollar business working just 4 days a week… all with a newborn who was born in February, 2010!

This is because I continue to invest in myself and my business – honing my craft and systematizing the RIGHT way so I can enjoy working 1 day a week or 5 days a week (my choosing) from anywhere in the world.

How am I able to do this?

Here’s the deal… I made a decision to stop wasting time. Yes, I like to hang out on the couch sometimes, AND I also know how to quickly focus, and take the right actions in the right order to produce results. No more dilly-dallying, making excuses, or comparing and despairing.

It’s all about clarity of purpose. When you are really clear on what you want the how-to’s come quickly and easily.

Open up to the possibility of what your practice could be if someone revealed to you all the resources and support you ALREADY HAVE sitting right in front of you. (Sadly most people never experience the light shining on their own resources… the consequence is that they end up perpetually chasing the rainbow!)

We all need a mentor. Choose someone who shines that light on you and holds you as not only as capable but sees a BIGGER vision for you than you even allow yourself to imagine.
